How to Measure Your Windows for Shades: A Step-by-Step Guide
Whether you're refreshing a room or doing a full home makeover, getting the right fit for your window shades is key to achieving a polished, professional look. Measuring your windows accurately is the first and most important step in this process, and it’s simpler than you might think! Here’s how to do it correctly.
What You’ll Need:
A metal tape measure (avoid fabric ones for accuracy)
A notepad and pen or a notes app on your phone
A step ladder (if measuring taller windows)
Before we begin, determine how you want your shades/blinds to fit: inside mount
(fitting within the window frame) or outside mount (mounted above and around the frame).
Each style has its own distinct look and will require different measurements.
1. Inside Mount (Fitted within the Window Frame)
Inside mount shades provide a clean, sleek look, highlighting the window's structure. Here’s how to measure for this style:
Step 1: Measure the Width
Measure the width of your window frame at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the narrowest measurement—this ensures the shade will fit properly inside the frame without rubbing or catching.
Tip: Windows can vary slightly, so taking three measurements ensures a more accurate fit.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Now, measure the height of your window from the top to the bottom, again at three points: left, center, and right. Record the longest measurement for the height to ensure full coverage.
Step 3: Check the Depth
Finally, check the depth of your window frame to ensure it can accommodate the shade. Most shades require a minimum depth to fit properly. Your window treatment provider can guide you on specific depth requirements based on your chosen style.
2. Outside Mount (Mounted Above and Around the Window Frame)
If you prefer to make the window appear larger or cover imperfections, outside mount shades are a great option. This style gives you more flexibility and can even block more light.
Step 1: Measure the Width
Measure the total width of the area you’d like the shade to cover. We recommend adding at least 2-3 inches beyond the window frame on each side to ensure good coverage and light control.
Tip: The wider the shade, the better it will be at blocking light and providing privacy.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Measure from the top of the mounting area (usually above the window frame) down to where you want the shade to end. Add a few extra inches to ensure full coverage. For example, if you're covering a window and part of the wall below, measure to that point.
